False Sense of Confidence

False Sense of Confidence

In today’s world parenting has changed tremendously.

Generation change also comes with inevitable consequences and one of them is instilling a false sense of confidence.

For instance, giving your children a trophy at the end of soccer season does not reinforce a true sense of confidence.

The saying “No Pain, No Gain” is exceptionally true, the agony of defeat is a very powerful tool if it’s instilled correctly in our children.

As a parent, we have to take the opportunity to build up their self-esteem in a positive way so that when they reach a certain point in life then reality does not smack them hard.

That mom and dad told them that life is part of failing and failing is a stepping stone to success.

That there is a value in failure, by experiencing failure your children will get to know themselves better and they’ll learn from their mistakes as a way to improve themselves.

So, I hope that you will allow your children to experience failure it will help build their self-awareness.

The Most Uncomfortable Thing to Do as a School Owner

Most of us started building our own school because of the impact that the martial arts have on us and it is something that we want to share with the world.

So opening a school is not just a business, but also a passion. And when we are passionate about something, money is the last equation.

I hope all of you realize that we can be passionate and also live the lifestyle of our dreams in martial arts. Our industry is thriving.

It is our nature as human beings that if we do something brand new or do something out of our comfort zone can be challenging.

You have the right to be compensated in return for teaching them the impact and benefits of martial arts, and the way how it impacted you as a school owner.

You can’t put a price tag on confidence, focus and discipline therefore don’t be afraid to ask about the tuition, and don’t be afraid to ask them to pay in full.

This is an investment for the students because the return is greater than the monetary value.

That is one thing you got to start understanding and get comfortable with asking for large amounts of money from your students.

Fear of Hurting Your Sparring Partner

Have you ever been afraid when you do sparring and when your student gets hurt?

If you have this fear, here’s a guide so you can prevent your student from being afraid or minimize it. The end goal is for your students to get really good at sparring because we cannot create students who cannot defend themselves.

Remember that sparring is a process.

You should never throw someone into someone else in the first 3 to 4 months of training, you’re having people spar from white belt to yellow belt level is not a good idea.

So at the beginning stages, they just kick in the air at each other maybe 4 feet away from each other and they have a partner who does the combination, the partners are not getting any contact but you are aiming at them.

When they start getting used to that it’s like the beginning of a drill, they start getting more comfortable then later on you can ask them to go 1 foot away, then 6 inches away. Then later as they get higher belts, more experienced, and confidence you can touch them but you can’t hit them, by the time they get into the black belt they can do controlled contact.

This will build them confidence, eliminate a lot of fear, and they are building the skills that are necessary to be good at sparring eventually.

The other one is to group them into three, the two people are going to work with each other, and the third person is the safety coach and the job of this is to make sure that the two people aren’t hurting and hitting each other. By doing this, they’ll get to learn about safety. Before you start your sparring or drills, you need to train everybody how to be a safety coach.

You always start with drills and do the sparring later on, in that way they get to be very good with techniques, at the same time they are working safely and learning to become better and get the chance to apply them.
