Summer Retention Strategies

Make your summer grow and thrive. We understand the pain that some school owners have been through knowing half of their students left and go on vacation and the other half are lazy and want to do other things. Do these strategies so you can’t have a poor summer cash flow.

  1. Change your curriculum

Do a theme week where you can announce in advance to get the excitement going, and they have something to look forward to.

  1. Every time they get to class and participate at a high level, you’ll give them a ticket

It will increase retention that will make them show up more in classes and execute their best in the class. It’s also a reminder for them that they are doing something positive.

  1. Utilizing software such as Spark Membership

Spark membership has a feature where you can promote your summer activity in the student app that can save you a lot of time and put in automation.

  1. Offer upgrades before summer camps

Other than that, you can also offer an upgrade to your students before the summer camp – if they upgrade to a high-level program, they’ll get a free camp.

Many schools have generated more income during summer because they’ve made the switch. If you add 3 to 4 one-week camps, you will get extra revenue from that. Every school reaches out to students in their community, so as a martial arts instructor and a school owner, you’re helping them change their lives. We have to create a better experience for them and, at the same time, embrace innovation.

How I Am Creating More Value for Retention and Enrollments

One of the most important areas that we need to focus on as school owners are by creating value as it’s equal to retention and enrollment. As a martial arts school owner, we are delivering that by creating a weekly theme.

It’s important that as a school owner you have a member’s only page for all of your students. In your enrollment protocol, ask them to take their phone out and ask them to like your business page and ask them to join your members-only page.

Make a weekly schedule of the values that we teach as a martial artist – discipline, focus, respect, determination, perseverance, integrity and so much more.

What we are doing every week, every Monday we post the theme of the week. Towards the end of the week, I give a motivational message on that particular theme.

This is one of the ways to create value with you and your students by letting them know that your program is more than just kicking and punching.

It’s important to stay positive and inspired. It only takes one to make a difference and the power of one belongs to us and it also belongs to you. Let the students and parents know that you are there to make a difference and how martial arts impacts you and your life.

The Culture of a Martial Arts School

Your culture is what stands out from other schools in your area.

Schools should have a signature system and a unique way to take someone from where they are to where they want to go – the A to B.

A true martial arts instructor believes that teaching martial arts is above making money.

“If you don’t stand for something, you will fall for anything.”

One of the things that are part of your unique signature system is the culture document.

What really people buy is high standards and if you’re taking a stand of who you are and you aren’t as a person, what you should do, and what you aren’t supposed to be doing in your business it will take off.

When people see your signature system, who you are, and who you are as a team they will instantly recognize the difference between you and the other schools. We’re not saying your is better or other schools are better, but you stood out because of the culture.

In your business, you need to have profits. You need to put your students above but you still need to be profitable.

How We Explain Benefits of Martial Arts to Prospects

How to explain martial arts to your potential students and their parents.

How scientifically martial arts impact them.

Taekwondo, it’s an ancient Korean martial art. Tae means hands, Kwon means foot, and do is the way and the philosophy of taekwondo.

It strengthens three areas of human beings and these areas are very important because it is the essence of being a human being – the mind, body, and spirit.

Mentally Taekwondo has a very simple philosophy, we believe that the mind is strong then your body is also strong. If your body is weak then your body is weak.

How you think is how you feel. Every action starts with a thought, and one of the most important things is that Taekwondo is designed to teach individuals their mental focus.

Taekwondo teaches you how to have a strong mind by controlling your thought pattern and controlling how you think.

Next in terms of physical Taekwondo has a very simple philosophy: if the mind is strong then your body is also strong. And your body is the most powerful tool that we possess as human beings.

Our body is so powerful that our bones are 7x stronger than steel, it will teach you how to make your body an ultimate weapon of self-defense.

Martial art is teaching you knowledge of how powerful your body can be in a scientifically proven set of skills.

Marketing Theory That Will Actually Help Any Business Owner

A martial arts school must have a steady flow of students, or else the business will be stressed out – if this happens, it will be less efficient in serving and impacting the community.

Some schools are doing digital marketing but have little success or not getting any traction at all. With that being said, I encourage school owners not to get easily discouraged when some strategies work for others and not for you. Keep trying, keep working and pay attention to how it works. Digital marketing is a learning process.

Jay Abraham shared a theory called Power Parthenon Strategy, which states that we need to have pillars that hold up our business to have a viable long-term business.

Imagine there are different columns in your business, and each column represents an advertising or marketing concept and action that you need to take. And if you have eight different columns, the idea is when one or two columns fail, there are still other columns left that are constantly bringing you business. So your roof doesn’t cave in.

And the mistake that I’m noticing is that school owners are focusing on just one thing, and when it fails, the business will be in trouble in the next couple of months.

Come up with different things that will hold the roof of your business. Although, this is not a quick turnaround as this will take several months to get your strategy in place. So to avoid being overwhelmed right away, we highly encourage you to do two things that will help market your business better.

Weekly Meeting Every School Owner Should Have

It is vital to go over weekly meetings with your team members or yourself if you have no team members yet.

I’ll be sharing the meetings that are a must every week for your school consistently:

  • Business Meeting
  • Team Training/Self Training
  • Social Media Marketing Meeting

Going over your statistics at every weekly meeting is vitally important. It allows you to know your school’s current status and find out where the challenges are. The areas that you will be focusing on are weekly performances, how many leads came in, how many are converted into trial offers, from trial offers, how many set up an appointment, how many showed up to those appointments, and lastly how many enrolled.

Weekly meetings maintain accountability and ensure that you, including your staff, are still on track as a school owner. Have a structured, step-by-step plan to follow and ensure that nothing falls through the cracks.

Trend That Our Industry Needs to Be Aware Of

The power of influence that our industry has in our community. I’ve been privileged as a leader to keep an eye out of the box by creating a new development that will impact our industry.

Who we are and what we are on a daily basis is easily overseen and sometimes it’s taken for granted.

Martial arts is a perfect and ideal service that has a core value that is founded upon, has a goal structure, and a title.

Martial arts are natural and evolving. It’s the only industry that gets free multi-billion dollar exposure on the core values of martial arts. For example in the TV series Cobra Kai, a lot of students are inquiring about the services.

Hollywood is naturally promoting the benefits, the philosophy, and the power of martial arts.

Other sports don’t have that philosophy, history, persona, and the presence of the master that martial arts have.

5 Basic Components Your Classes Should Have

Teaching classes is the main product that we have and as a school, we have to make sure it is impactful and powerful.

These are the basic key components in a class that your instructors should review to build an exciting class for students:

  1. Having fun

You want your classes to be fun. As an instructor you have to look at your class plan and decide how you can make it fun, it makes you more excited and both children and adults are always looking forward to having fun.

  1. Friendship

Building friendships in class. Based on statistics, the #1 reason why people stay in martial arts is because of their friends. So we want to mix a class that is fun and builds friendships. We can do a lot of combat sprints – by partnering with somebody, they count and cheer for you and learn how you can be a better teammate in that aspect of the class.

  1. Motivation

We want to make sure our class is motivating, exciting, and empowering. As an instructor, be there and have the charisma and empower your students. Each student must at least be empowered 3x, and that’s where your assistant comes into place. Your assistant should go to each person and empower them so they will go to class feeling excited and motivated.

  1. Martial arts

Make sure you have a dynamic, relevant, and exciting curriculum. You can mix the traditional martial arts, do a sparring experience and upgrade training experience. Through this, it will create a high level of martial artists.

  1. Transformation

Students are getting stronger, they got better at the techniques. Doing cool drills and challenges makes them better martial artists and has a dynamic and fun experience for the students.

Remind them of everything that they have learned in class. Be in a mindset as an instructor that every student in the class is progressing.

How Do You Handle Student Drop and Objections

One thing that school owners hate is dropouts – when students are quitting.

We as martial artists know how it empowers a child practicing martial arts but it is our job to consistently relay that message.

Do this by doing reverse psychology.

One of the best ways to convince and persuade people is by not telling them why they should do that, but the other way around.

What was their reason (their why), their purpose, and finding out their pain.

When the student wants to quit, I’d tell the parents, “I’m happy to hear that he wants to quit martial arts” and the parent would then ask why.

He has to develop through events and experiences that happened throughout his lifetime.

We have to give him a sense of accomplishment, we have to increase his self-worth and self-confidence for him to be a motivated person.

If the reason for enrolling is to boost confidence, motivation and be more focused and it’s not showing in his performance, then it’s not going to happen overnight.

It has to happen through commitment.

Talk to the student and give them the reinforcement that they need.

Remember, sooner or later every single one of your students is going to quit and stop doing it, especially the child.

But you, as a martial artist, it’s your responsibility to reinforce and be united with people that can impact them, especially their parents.

Mind Hack for Success

The most powerful tool that we have as human beings is our minds.

The most powerful part of our mind is the subconscious. Our subconscious mind operates on a subliminal level, it creates its own pattern of thought process which leads to action and becomes a habit if you are not conscious of it.

That stands for our growth, it can also hold us back from being successful.

You have to be consciously aware of how and where your current mindset is so that way you can start positioning yourself from success.

When we start our thought process and start honing on it, solutions start coming and when we start searching for answers by being persistent and relentless we will achieve what we want to get.

By focusing on the conscious level and not allowing my subconscious mind to take control and never do things on a subliminal level.

Be constantly laser-focused on your environment, surroundings, and thought process.

Don’t be a hamster that is constantly running in a wheel and digging for a result.

Be in a mindset of jumping out from the wheel and asking what are you going to do differently – how are you going to change your way of thinking, your mindset on how you can become successful and get to where you want to get.

Take advantage of modern technology, and be resourceful as it can save a lot of your time.
